Samsung SmartTags are compact tracking devices designed to help you locate everyday items using your Samsung Galaxy smartphone. Launched as Samsung’s answer to item trackers, they integrate with the SmartThings ecosystem, aiming to provide peace of mind for lost belongings. The latest iteration is the Samsung SmartTag2.
What are Samsung SmartTags?
A Samsung SmartTag is a small, typically ring-shaped (SmartTag2) or square (original SmartTag) device that you can attach to various items. It contains a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) radio, a speaker, and in some models (like the SmartTag+ and SmartTag2), an Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip. They are powered by a replaceable coin-cell battery.
How Do They Work?
SmartTags operate by leveraging Samsung’s “SmartThings Find” network, which is built into Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets.
- Bluetooth Signal: Your SmartTag continuously emits a secure Bluetooth signal.
- SmartThings Find Network Detection: When any compatible Samsung Galaxy device (running Android 9.0 or later with the SmartThings app) comes within Bluetooth range of your SmartTag, it anonymously detects this signal.
- Location Transmission: That nearby Samsung device then securely and anonymously relays your SmartTag’s location data to the SmartThings Find network.
- SmartThings App: You can then open the SmartThings app on your Samsung Galaxy device and see your SmartTag’s location on a map.
For SmartTag+ and SmartTag2 models, if you have a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone with a UWB chip (e.g., Galaxy S21+ and Ultra, Note 20 Ultra, newer high-end models), you can use Compass View or AR Finding. This feature provides precise directional guidance and even augmented reality overlays on your phone’s camera view to lead you directly to your tag when it’s nearby.
If someone finds your lost SmartTag, they can tap it with an NFC-capable smartphone (Android or iOS) to access a customizable message with your contact details, if you’ve enabled “Lost Mode.”
SmartTags also feature a programmable button that can be configured to control SmartThings-compatible smart home devices or trigger routines with a single or long press. They can also be used to find your misplaced Samsung phone by pressing the tag’s button.
What Are They Good For?
SmartTags are effective for keeping track of personal items, particularly for users within the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem.
- Keys: Easily attach to keyrings for quick location around the home or office.
- Wallets/Purses: Slip into your wallet or a small pocket.
- Bags & Backpacks: Ideal for gym bags, school bags, or travel luggage. Useful for seeing if your checked bag made it to the airport or is on the carousel.
- Pet Collars: Many users attach them to pet collars for tracking.
- Bicycles/Scooters: Can be discreetly placed on bikes for potential recovery (though not a primary anti-theft solution).
- Finding Your Phone: The programmable button can make your connected Samsung phone ring, even if it’s on silent.
Pros and Cons of Samsung SmartTags
Pros:
- Affordable: Competitively priced with other Bluetooth trackers.
- No Subscription: Basic tracking functionality does not require ongoing fees.
- Long Battery Life: Typically lasts around 500 days (SmartTag2) on a replaceable CR2032 battery.
- SmartThings Find Network: Leverages the large network of active Samsung Galaxy devices, providing location updates in populated areas.
- UWB Precision (SmartTag+/SmartTag2): Offers accurate directional finding for compatible Samsung phones.
- Programmable Button: Can be used to control smart home devices or find your phone.
- Built-in Loop (SmartTag2): The redesigned SmartTag2 has an integrated metal loop, making it easy to attach to keyrings and bags without extra accessories.
- Durable & Water Resistant: The SmartTag2 has an IP67 rating, offering good dust and water resistance.
- Location History: The SmartThings Find app often provides a location history, showing where the tag has been.
Cons:
- Samsung Ecosystem Dependent: Requires a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet to set up and track. Not compatible with other Android phones or iOS.
- Network Density: While large, the SmartThings Find network might not be as universally dense as Apple’s Find My network in all regions, potentially leading to less frequent updates in less populated areas.
- Limited Direct Range: Like all Bluetooth trackers, the direct finding range is limited. Beyond that, it relies on passing Samsung devices.
- Not a True GPS Tracker: Cannot provide continuous, real-time tracking of movement in remote areas where no other Samsung devices are present.
- Privacy Concerns (Misuse): While Samsung has implemented “Unknown tag alerts” to notify users if an unfamiliar SmartTag is traveling with them, the potential for misuse for unwanted tracking remains a consideration.
- UWB Limitations: Precision finding (Compass View/AR Finding) requires specific, newer Samsung phones with UWB chips.
Samsung SmartTags are a valuable accessory for users firmly within the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem. They offer a robust, affordable, and battery-efficient solution for locating misplaced everyday items, with the added benefit of smart home integration for convenience.
